Musetti sets up Tiafoe clash

Lorenzo Musetti continues his excellent clay court season with a first ever win over Holger Rune to move into his first Roland-Garros quarterfinal, and his second at major level overall after his run to the semis at Wimbledon last summer.

The Italian world No.7, who has reached the Monte-Carlo final and semifinals in Madrid and Rome in the past weeks, shrugged off the loss of the second set to beat the Dane 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the Chatrier night session.

Musetti will play surprise American quarterfinalist Frances Tiafoe in the last eight.

23:45

Musetti makes his move

Since he lost that second set, Lorenzo Musetti has produced the better tennis of the two on Chatrier. The Italian world No.7 is looking smooth as he moves ahead two sets to one and snags an early break in the fourth. He's currently in front 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 2-1. Can Holger Rune find a route back into this...

Holger levels under the lights

As we approach 11pm here in Paris, Holger Rune takes the second set 6-3 off Lorenzo Musetti to level their fourth round contest on Chatrier. The first set went the way of the Italian 7-5. Those two sets have taken the best part of two hours and if it stays this close throughout it’s going to be a late finish for these two gladiators.

Last eight for 'Big Foe'

Frances Tiafoe breaks new ground in Paris with his first quarterfinal run. The American has just finished off Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4) on Lenglen.

He revealed in his on-court interview afterwards that he was so determined to get it done on Sunday that he had TWENTY shirts in his kitbag. The 440,000 euros he's now guaranteed as a quarterfinalist should help him with the laundry bill.

And, incredibly, he's into the last eight without dropping a set.

It’s a fifth major quarterfinal overall for Tiafoe and his first away from hard courts. He’ll face Musetti or Rune later in the event.

It's on: Musetti vs Rune

After a short delay due to a long day session on Chatrier, the lights are up and we're good to go with Sunday's evening match. It's Lorenzo Musetti vs Holger Rune for a place in the quarterfinals...

Alcaraz beats Shelton in four

Carlos Alcaraz comes through a high-quality fourth round test against Ben Shelton in four sets 7-6(8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in a shade over three hours.

There’ll be many wondering whether that match might have taken a different path had Shelton converted any of the three set points he had in the opening chapter. We'll never know.

Alcaraz will be pleased - and a touch relieved - to have wrapped that up in four sets. It's the sort of test at this stage of a Grand Slam that sharpens you up nicely. He’ll face Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals.

Shelton forces a fourth set

It’s a good time to join the Radio Roland-Garros team as they bring live coverage of the Carlos Alcaraz-Ben Shelton tussle from Chatrier.

Shelton missed three set points in the opening set but he converted more chances in the third to take it into a fourth set.

Alcaraz is ahead 7-6(8), 6-3, 4-6.

Across on Lenglen another American Frances Tiafoe is on track for a quarterfinal spot as he leads Germany’s Daniel Altmaier by a set.

Sabalenka finishes off Anisimova

As the Alcaraz-Shelton first set comes to an end, over on Lenglen Aryna Sabalenka books her quarterfinal spot by beating American Amanda Anisimova 7-5, 6-3 - securing the win with a backhand winner up the line on her eighth match point. That victory keeps the world No.1 on course for a first Roland-Garros title and her next test will come against Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen from China.

First set Alcaraz 7-6(8)

Carlos Alcaraz saves three set points to edge a thriller of a first set tiebreak 10-8 against American Ben Shelton on Chatrier - easily one of the best passages of play of the tournament so far that featured one of the points of the event so far (look out for that later).

Shelton threw everything he had at the defending champion on his way to building a 6-4 lead in the shootout and had a third set point at 7-6. Alcaraz dug deep though with some insane defence to eventually steal it 10-8.

Zheng joins Iga in last eight

While the Swiatek-Rybakina drama was unfolding on Chatrier, eighth seed Zheng Qinwen came through a gruelling 2hr 47min three-setter to beat Liudmila Samsonova 7-6(5), 1-6, 6-3 on Court Suzanne-Lenglen. The Chinese star plays either Aryna Sabalenka or Amanda Anisimova in the quarterfinals.

Swiatek survives Rybakina power

Iga Swiatek comes through a huge test to fight off the challenge of Elena Rybakina 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 to extend her Roland-Garros win streak to 25 matches.

It’s yet another remarkable performance from the four-time champion after she trailed 6-1, 2-0 early in the second set.

In a tense final set, the Pole broke Rybakina to 15 for a 6-5 lead and served out the victory with authority to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina.

Swiatek’s last defeat at the Paris major came against Greek Maria Sakkari in the 2021 quarterfinals. The run continues...

Iga back in business

It’s a champion's response from Iga Swiatek who rises to the challenge after trailing Elena Rybakina 6-1, 2-0. The Pole storms back to take the second set 6-3 to force a decider on Chatrier. Can Rybakina respond? Will Iga extend her Paris win streak to 25 matches? Game on for a place in the last eight…

Over on Lenglen meanwhile eighth seed Zheng Qinwen is into a decider with 19th seed Liudmila Samsonova. Olympic gold winner Zheng took the first set 7-6(5), with Samsonova fighting back to take the second 6-1.

Junior events start Sunday

The boys' and girls' singles get going here today and Alex Sharp has been casting his eye over the draws to pick out some of the names to watch. If you’re on site at Roland-Garros this week, check out some junior tennis. These kids play at an incredible level and you might just end up watching a future Grand Slam champion on the professional tours. Coco Gauff, Holger Rune, Tommy Paul and Alexei Popyrin are all former junior champions in Paris who are in the fourth round of the men’s and women’s draws this year. Give Sharpy’s preview a read below.

First set Rybakina 6-1

No, you’re not seeing things. Iga Swiatek’s 24-match win streak here is under serious threat as Elena Rybakina hammers her way through the opening set against the four-time champion. It was a set of brutal ball-striking from the Kazakh who hasn't allowed Swiatek to settle.

It’s not over yet of course, but the fifth seed has some serious sledding ahead to turn this one around…

Rybakina sprints to 3-0 lead

Many wondered whether Elena Rybakina would cause big problems for four-time champion Iga Swiatek today and so far… she’s causing big problems.

The recent Strasbourg champion breaks in the second game before a tight hold jumps her into an early 3-0 lead over Swiatek who takes a 24-match RG win streak into today’s fourth round clash. Follow the action through the links below.

Svitolina saves match points to beat Paolini

What a win for Elina Svitolina who saves three match points to beat fourth seed and 2024 runner-up Jasmine Paolini 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-1.

The world No.14 saved two match points at 4-5 in the second set and another deep in the tiebreak. It’s the 13th Grand Slam quarterfinal of Svitolina's career and her fifth here in Paris.

“I still can’t believe this match finished my way,” says the Ukrainian on court. “Here I am in the next round.”

Svitolina plays Elena Rybakina or Iga Swiątek in the last eight. They’re up next on Chatrier.

13:13

Paul through to last eight

We have our first quarter-finalist of RG2025.

No.12 seed Tommy Paul is through with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 win over Australia's Alexei Popyrin in just 1h 51m.

Paul now faces the winner of the clash between defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and No.13 seed Ben Shelton, which is up later on Chatrier.

This is Paul’s deepest run in seven appearances at Roland-Garros, and matches the quarter-final showings he made last year at Wimbledon and the Australian Open in January.

Champions in action on Day 8

Both singles winners from RG2024 are in action today as they bid to defend their titles.

Iga Swiatek is going for a fourth straight RG trophy (and fifth overall) and faces 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina on Chatrier for a place in the quarter-finals.

After that, Carlos Alcaraz will take to the court as he looks to add another Grand Slam trophy to the four he already has on his shelf. First he needs to get past Ben Shelton, who is looking to add a deep run here in Paris to the semi-finals he has reached in New York and Melbourne.

Elsewhere around the grounds on Sunday, the boys’ and girls’ singles get going. Boys’ No.1 seed Spaniard Andres Santamarta Roig takes on French wild card Ferdinand Livet Novkirichka, while the No.2 seed in the girls’ draw, America's Kristina Penickova, faces Rosita Dencheva from Bulgaria.
